Documentary photography is a style of photography that provides a straightforward and accurate representation of people, places, objects and events, and is often used in report - Tate modern
what is documenting communities?
taking notes on a place or a group of people like a school or a area, all relating on something or something to do with eachother.
some of the reasons people might wants to document places and people is because of the variety of people and what there doing makes it more interesting
dawoud bey takes pictures of people in his community and there aware of him being there but relaxed and okay with them doing it.
the relationship with the photographer the person that the picture is being taken off
it mutual they dont really have alot to say they just get the picture taken off then move on to the next person.
i think it was a positive realationship but she had somewhere to be or in a rush because she was wearing fancy clothes such as a formal event

DEYWOUD BEY
A photographer would to document communities since Its a different type of photography to other things since it's a group of people and their all together and they could all know each other like families or friends and they could be on their way somewhere, it kind of has a meaning behind it .
It could be linked to street photography in many different ways since you'r mostly going to be taking these pictures on the street because the people are out in their community . Deywoud Bey takes his pictures in a different way since that theres a range of different people living their lives and of all different ages but mostly focused on the black community .
The relationship between the photographer and the subject was if its a stranger then there was no realationship once they don't know each other and their just taking pictures of them but if they know each other some type of trust or bond has to be there so they can take the picture comfortably .
its important for Deywoud bey to photograph his community because its his community not just any one so it would be nicer to take pictures of them and not other people and he moved back there later in his life ,he knows his way around everywhere so it would be easier
what might his inspiration would of been he was from Harlem and then he left but he decided to move to his home town since he liked the people.
what interested him within his community was that he began photographing the streets of Harlem in 1975 weekly but he decided to move back to his community because he wanted to be a part of it again , he got to know everyone like shopkeepers and others in the neighborhood .
he communicated with his subjects in a way where would spot someone in the street and ask if he can take a picture of them if they say yes then he would set up his camera and ask them to pose in whatever way that is comfortable to them.

Liz Jhonson Artur
I chose this photographer since she is very passionate about her work and i like how creative she is with how she presents it with the bamboo instead of a plain frame.
documenting your community can make you have a different view on everything with the people in your community and have a step in their shoes and a look in there perspective, She cares a lot about persona and people like the BLM movement with black women with there hair and sexuality with how to express yourself.
She says that she looks at her photography as a library and each piece is a chapter of a book that she's honored to display.
Dark room.
when I went into the dark room I got my positive and negative pictures of one of my friends that i took pictures of in school.
Orginal image Inverted image
I took my paper negative and placed it under the enlarger machine with photography paper underneath and set it to 5 seconds , the light shined on just the image in a shape of a square. As soon as it was complete I placed my paper negative in development liquid with tongs ( you have to make sure the whole image is dissolved and put into smoothly so you don't get any chemical lines which will ruin the image and make the colours uneven). I left it for about 8 seconds until the image was darker then before,I moved my image to stock fix to make sure the image didn't process anymore, I took the image out and dripped all the chemicals off the image back into the liquid . Next i placed it in water for 20 minutes to set the image.
Adama Jalloh.
Adama Jalloh is a London photographer.
London’s very bright and colourful place full with different types of people and Adama Jallohs photographs you can see that. she uses a black-and-white filter and you can still see the colour and personality with the black community who she takes pictures of with all ages doing different things or things that they love.

Documenting Communities
when you change the image to black and white you can see the shadows more clearly than before theres less contrast and theres less brightness in the image , looking at the picture you can see the colours but its more even. i also cropped the image so theres less wall and you can focus on the person .

the layout is landscape and its only her face and its very natural because of how the sunlight is hitting her face, she didnt know i was taking the picture so she could pose or make a forced face. the shadows have shapes and lines on the wall which makes it abosrbing.

i cropped the image
and then made it black and white
Tyler Mitchell
Tyler Mitchell is a American photographer, 12 April 1995 - 26 years old, made a book called i can make you feel good presenting his work, he is best known for him taking photographs of Beyoncé for the cover of vogue when he was only 23 years old he also was the FIRST young and black photographer to do so. He started off making videos of his friends skateboarding in Georgia and using clothes from his wardrobe and now he is a very well known photographer with a very successful career ahead of him. Tylers work is very modern and unusual with loads of colours and he said that he got his inspiration from Cuba because of how colourful and vibrant the country is.
I really like this picture since you cant see her face you can only see her back, also the sand spread across there back is almost shaped like a heart. Their at a beach and its really sunny and no clouds. the photography is really simplistic but also interesting and leaves you wondering with stuff like who are they with or are they talking to looking at someone? why aren't they showing their face? what country are they in? this image reminds me of being on holiday and relaxation, the tones of their skin against the swimming costume really complements each other along with the natural sun light. Theres so much space above their head with the tones of the sky and the sand below it. something that interests me most is the sand, it really adds something more to the image and moreover makes it distinctive and singular, the framing is also portrait.
We had to create a series of images inspired by Tyler Mitchell. These images were supposed to be more focused. Using just the head and shoulders, or the torso to crop and frame the images. We also used props to add to the image. I approached the task differently by doing my own thing with my own style but still inspired by Tyler mitchell i also made the image more saturated and vibrant. I found this task fun because of the props and fabrics I got to use. the challenging part was trying to be unique and use different things from what i've done before since there inspired by Tyler.

these pictures were inspired by Tyler Mitchell.. they are very colorful and have fabric.. they have minimal backgrounds or colorful ones. these pictures are effective because they are very different from other ones that i have took and that i have seen, what does work so well is the use of the same props the background is a bit messy in some of the pictures but that can be fixed..The angle is all the same which is shoulders and head up,. some pictures are more vibrant then others and some pictures have more exposure. the photo theme is fabrics and using them in a creative way.
I selected pictures i have taken in the past and printed them onto a a4 piece of paper and then cut them out. I looked at what style and proposition i like. i placed them onto the table and switched them around and took photos of them.
my inspiration:
im going to be laying my pictures on top of eachother in all different ways.
i stuck my pictures in a4 on card and card them out to mount onto my board.

My photos that i have took and what im going to be using
I choose these images because they are from a variety and I like how colourful and different they are from one another. Most of them are of places and where I've been, whenever I go out I take pictures if i like the area.
this was my final piece. I got this idea of pinterest and put 8 a4 pieces of paper onto this wooden stick but after i analyzed it and properly looked at it i realised that i can do better and something i perfer. I think this was a bit confusing and boring. So i decided to change it but keep the pictures which turned into this:
I combined my knowledge and skills to make this piece, the images are based within my communities, where I go and what I do on the weekends. When i'm out I take pictures of my surroundings as much as I can. I was inspired by Tyler Mitchell and his use of colour, also the way which he takes close-up photographs.. like the outcome. This idea is a lot better then the previous, I used the same images but less of them and printed out mini versions of them which are a5 then stuck them on top. I changed it since this one is more absorbing and unique rather then the other one and overall less boring. I was asked to document my community and thats what I did, I didn't put any people in it since I wouldn't be abled to take a picture of everyone in my community so I took pictures of were i lived or where I like to go. 5 of these images are close to my house like Blackheath, Greenwich or O2 but one is a little far which is Leicester square but I go there a lot. I took all of these on my phone and I put the contrast higher then normal because I like when pictures are vibrant and bring out the color rather then it being washed out. I also like how its a like a collage but with not that many photos. These pictures may change the way view society since the pictures all look very different to each other and have no similarities.

Nick Meyer-The Local
most of the picutres are against a blank wall and have high saturation. i would say this is somewhere in Amercia. it looks like they've used some type of filter, the images are shoulders up and have space above there head. the background seems old fashioned and have a theme of cars with gas stations, gargages, cars and junkyards. the people in the pictures are very unique looking and i would say they have a interesting community together
This image looks very different. it looks like it was taken outside and she would'nt be wearing that inside but the lighting looks like studio lighting and white light, she looks different from others, she has bright blue eyes and she's standing in a weird position she's pretty but she looks like she could be homeless or someone with less money.
the camera is advanced and is clear. i feel like she does'nt have that much money. the frame is portrait. Where the picture was taken was somewhere cold because of what she's wearing. |
these photos are photojournalism , street photography and still life.
nick meyer is an american photographer living in Western Massachusetts. lots of his pictures are taken outside of people and nature. My favorite one is the local, I a eery and empty sense of his photography. Theyre quiet dark but some of them have natural light but are still dull. one of his projects are called between life and death and theyre a range of pictures and he says how hes afraid of dying and getting old, they explore the anxiety of eventually dying.

Zoe Leonard
Zoe Leonard is an American photographer who takes pictures of shop fronts from around the world. At first I didn’t find them that interesting but then after I looked more into it and found that she was doing it because of the change after the world war when we used to make our clothes from down the road in factories but then changed to other countries like Bangladesh , japan and china since its cheaper to make them there. The way shops have changed over time not just the outside but also what they sell and where they’re come from. what I also find interesting is the quality of the camera and how it improves over time.
These pictures were inspired by zoe leonard and how she takes picutres of shop fronts but i did it in my area. I think to improve I would them them straight on but i couldnt since how busy some of the roads are and i would get in the way. I would also take pictures of nicer shops like cafes and florists since they are more aesthetically pleasing to look at. im not that pleased about them because i feel like the angle is bad but I like how the colours pop though.
I chose to photograph my community shops . The theme is shops I go to or shops in my community. I took it on my phone and turned the exposure down on it to make it less light , I took photos of these shops because they look most pleasing to look at , they are bright or have nice shop fronts . My favourite picture I took is the one of the ivy cafe one because of how dim it is and also the shape of the photo , how tall it is compared to the others and how it sticks out. Another thing I like it how one of the shops is closed and the other is open it gives it more variety and character.
End of project evolution
I explored the theme of documenting my community or my area . My ideas developed and improved as I went along with my work , I changed my work multiple times for something I liked more . A artist that I looked at was Zoe Lenord , she inspired me to take pictures like her but in my community .
