My relationship with nature is that I often go to parks to walk my dog and that's really it , I don't really have a strong relationship with the natural world, when I take my pictures or go out to meet my friends I normally go to central London. The only time I go out into nature really is when i'm with my cousin since she lives in the country side.
I don't really go to a specific place to take pictures, when I go out normally something catches my eye that I like of a building or nature or even something inside I just take a picture. There is no fixed place to take pictures because everything is photographable if you take the picture the right way. There are a lot of nice places like canary whalf and parks but there is places to take pictures everywhere
People take pictures of nature since it's a beautiful thing and worthy of praise, everywhere you go nature if different and in different countries. taking pictures of nature raise awareness of the environment we live in since a lot of it goes unnoticed.
Photographs can help us change the way we see things since you don't have to physically be in that place to be looking at it. your perception on something might be different in a picture in real life. People take there pictures in unique ways to do with the position , framing , lighting, quality and all different properties. 2 people could be taking a picture of the exact same thing and it can be very different from each other because of their way of taking it and their way of seeing it.

landscape pictures I have took in the past.
when I think of the word landscape I automatically think of outside. Things like mountains and large natural and urban things outside. I also think that a picture has to be outside to be a landscape but thats not true, the photo has to be wider then it is tall really whatever in the picture. normally when landscape pictures are taken its taken of elements of nature like hills, ponds, rivers, lakes and different types of vegetation . Landscapes are very therapeutic and peaceful and pleasing to the eye.
I went around school and took pictures of landscapes outside.
the first ten words that pop into my head when i think of a landscape are:
meandering, nature , vibrate , green , warm , mountainous, leaves, enviorment,
meandering, nature , vibrate , green , warm , mountainous, leaves, enviorment,
the kind of pictures that come up when I google landscape are parks , hills, lakes and other aspects of nature.when i think of my ideal landscape I think of a landscape with a mountain and a sunset in the background with lots of trees and green. A very peaceful environment to be in and appealing to look at, somewhere where you can feel therapeutic and not have to worry about anything and really take in the nature . this is naturalism since its a actual place in nature and not a backdrop, a photograph should be direst and simple to show people in their environment in nature and what it looks like with no filter or editing. A landscape is a area of land which is mostly green which other parts of nature in it, and in often terms for there aesthetic appeal. unlike a portrait its taken from from straight up point and is of sculptures or people if its a self portrait and not necessarily of nature.
Slide evaluation.
I got my image and cut out parts of it, I was influenced by Dafna Talmor because I cut up the landscape and constructed a utopian landscape, I used mark making to and my finger print and added it to the image, I made my image different from others by doing that. I took away from the film to make a place that doesn't exist in reality and made it in a way I like it and see it, I constructed my own version,
The idea of a landscape.
The idea of this picture is to take it of the sky because of how the cloud look invented and contrast well next to each other, but in my opinion it looks boring and looks generic so they added a cowboy which you don't usually see since its a fictional character, it fits the setting and makes the picture look more interesting since the area its taken in looks like a desert or a deserted area. The sky exposure of the sky is very high and the photo almost looks old like it was took in the 1970s in America. I feel like the photographer placed the cowboy there and took it at the right to get the perfect shot to get it all in the frame but still to the left so you can still focus on the background and the cowboy isn't the main part of the picture. The position of the camera is close to the floor so the photographer can get everything in the frame.
The area is very plain and boring, there is nothing in the photo apart from the landscape, a usual landscape is very green and has lots of nature but this is opposite. There aren't any colours and almost looks like its colourless like another planet like mars. There aren't any clouds in the sky and gives a very warm feeling. The vantage point is low and close to the ground to capture everything like in the other photo. I don't think the photographer has a relationship with the area but just thought it was a good place to take a photo since its unusual and unnatural.
In this picture it looks like the city at the bottom has been animated or plastered onto the sky. The sky is very vibrant and blue and has no clouds so you focus on the city line. I think this is a mix of an abstract and naturalistic image since the sky makes it naturalistic and it's abstract because it doesn't really exist without me making it exist. I cut out the skyline very sharp but since the wind was making it bend backwards ,it looks a bit more smoother around the edges which makes it look more animated. I like how the cars are in this picture and the sky actually looks like it's there behind the city . Overall I like this picture but I wish the background was a bit more interesting.
Photography trip
We went to visit the The Photography Centre at V&A museum we walked around and took pictures of the photography exhibit which had many amazing and unique photographs, we also saw a piece by Dafna Talmor which who I had been studying in class. In relation to landscape images I saw photographs by Paul Graham and Dafna Talmor. When i saw dafna talmors images in person I thought her images were going to be in 3D since they have been layered onto eachother. Looking at the image it was completely flat since it was a print rather then real slides. There was many things to look at like we saw old cameras which I really liked because I had never seen it before .
This is a picture I really liked by Maurice Broomfield.
He takes pictures in factories and industries. When I locate remind me of a movie set which has been made on purpose for a shoot and you wouldnt expected it to be taken in a factory. This was taken in 2006 from a scan made from his original colour transparency. The blue light spreading from The electrical arc cutting casts long dark shadows around the circular thing he's sitting in.

these 2 images are very different but also very similar at the same time, they have similar content but also have there own specialities. The one on the left is natural and has barely anything changed other than there being barely any colour with a vintage yellow tint but the one on the right is constructed. I personally dislike the left image more since it doesn't have that much personality and it could be easily recreated with a filter, I would like it more if it had a story behind it or a meaning. the right image has more texture since it looks like the edges have been burned, its clear that the image has been shaped to look a certain way rather then the left has just been taken anyhow. I think the right image is more appealing because of the dark areas and the edges around it, its less dull and boring to look and makes it alot different to the other. Both images have lines in and also water, there is barely any colour and looks achromatic.
Dionne Lee's Constructed Landscape
Drafts from Dionne Lee on Vimeo.
- My thoughts on the video are that it is quite difficult to watch because it is filmed in real time with being edited. I think that is also silent and it is too long.
- The artist selected images of landscapes and constructed an image by tearing, cutting and folding the paper to create a kind of collage.
- The image relates to the topic as the artist constructed new landscapes by blending images together.
- The art is presented as a video. I think she should have taken pictures of each of the pieces she made at the end so people wouldn't get bored or at least sped it up so you can see the process.

this is the journey of me making my piece and the picture is the finished product. I recorded on my phone in time lapse and just did it how it came to mind, I tried to go with the flow but I had to change a couple things because it didn't look right. I decided to add music to my video because It wouldn't of been so boring to watch in my opinion.
I made my own piece with some of my own pictures and others which I found on the internet. I had a colour scheme on the green one but with the other just pictures of nature. I enjoyed doing this task since I could rip and fold in whatever way I wanted to try get the look that I wanted, I documented how I made it in the video above. I think I could of improved if I make more collages next time with different techniques.
Bill armstrong
In his interview he uses long exposures, as well as using diffusion filters on a light table with digital editingBill Armstrong was born in Massachusetts Concord. I really like his work because it remind me of spiritual art and aura which I find interesting. This is one of my favourite artists I've researched so far since I've never seen it before. If his work was from a certain genre I think it would be from Kirlian photography since it's very ethereal with very soft colours that compliment each other. I wouldn't say its because of the photo it takes it just gives off the same type of mood if they were taken the same way. The photographs look as if they have been drawn and blended out. In his interview he uses long exposures, as well as using diffusion filters on a light table with digital editing
The task was to take photos with a blurred camera of landscapes around school, I used aef lock on my phone and put my fingers in front of the photo to make it out of focus. I didn't like the task because I don't like taking pictures of nature and how it was blurry. I feel as if you can't see what i'm taking a picture of and cant really appreciate what it is. This is related to constructed landscapes since I made it blurry and made it personalised because of the way i'm taking the picture. I could improve this by taking pictures of different things outside rather than the same thing but in a different way. My favourite one is the 8th one since you can't tell where I am and I like how you can see the colours and what it is but still is a bit blurred.
Ray Metzkers ''Picture Interuptus''
Things I like about his work
- his work is of landscapes that are interrupted by anything
-they are black and white which I like since they aren't overwhelming
-I like his use of shadows with paper since I find it really eye catching
- use of props to create his images
- different angles
-his images are really simple but he makes them more captivating by using posters and not real people
-how the images are just black and white and not different shades like grey ect.
-theres a common theme about how he does his work and I like how you can tell its his because he has his own personal style
- his images focus on shadow, lines and focus

Ray Metzker uses a 4x5-inch view camera and then with a 35mm camera, he makes his images distorted and filling in black. He uses great contrasting tones, this futher emphasizes the dark lines and shadows in his photos. He has to think of the colour and the background and see if there is any shadows to make it more dark, he mainly uses dim places with less colour and if he uses any light it will only be in one spot.
I decided to not to make my pictures black and white because I like his style of work but I like to keep it to mine, I personalised my pictures but not 100 percent copying what he's doing in my images you can see my landscape more than his and I also like that more. I used other pictures with holes to put infront of the camera and blocked parts out. I also used random objects of whatever I found that would do it best to construct the landscape, I used this clear magnifying dome to make one part of the pictured blurred and distorted but the rest is normally taken and you can see what it is clearly.
Making it black and white
Other experiments
This is another experiment of pictus interuptus that I did in lesson, I printed my images from last week and some others that i have took and made tiny square holes and layered all the photos onto the table, I used one of my images to look through and take pictures.
I zoomed in the camera into the hole to see the other pictures, I did different angles to get different out comes.

evaluation - my attempt
I took pictures of landscapes outside of school and inside of school. I printed them out on A4 then took things that I found interesting or abstract, inside of just sticking them straight on I took all the images then bundles them on top of each other on a plain piece of paper, I then cut those out into different shapes like circles or just any random cut out, I proceeded to stick them down on my landscapes where ever I thought that looked best. I then scanned it onto a4 so it looked more flat and here is the result, I am going to rescan them again with different colours. I like the outcome since its nothing that ive done before and I didnt have to do multiple attempts

Liesel Pfeffer is a visual photographer from Brisbane Australia living and woking in Berlin, Germany.
She Constructs images of the natural world and the built world and she also uses darkroom techniques with still-life photography and collage. She uses all different landscapes from around the world and also outer space, I personally like this piece because of how it looks like a staircase of multiple colors and places all next to each other which makes a nice contrast. Its effective because of how its so perfectly connected and its very eye catching since there is no imperfections. |
Geraldo de Barros
Gerlado de barros was born February 27th 1923 and was a Brazilian painter who also worked in engraving, graphic arts and industrial design. He abandoned photography for over 30 years and dedicated himself to art and design, started his photography at only 16 years old which he explored scratching and manipulating negatives and a variation of different images to add that white line around the image and the black background. Barros was focusing on landscapes but then moved onto the world of abstraction. I find his art fascinating since he cut out the landscapes most interesting part in any shape or form, I can expand this even more by using the dark room. Im inspired by him since I can twist his work into something else with my own addition. I can make a collage of all of these images I make which would add more to the whole piece with exploring different ways to make it more of my work with just a hint of him.
My experiment
I put my pictures that I took into negatives so it can be put onto acetate , I then put it through the printer to make them clear on some parts to put in front of the projector to make a vague shadow. I also made sure that I was using the same image projected that was on the acetate so it made the same shape but as a shadow. I got inspiration from Geraldo de Barros since he used shadows to make his images, Instead of copying him I thought it would be better to project it and make a shadow another way, the acetate was really effective since it didn't cast out a complete shadow and some underneath was still was still being shown.
Acetate images..
To create this I made sure the images were black and white so they could be inverted into a negative , it printed the images onto acetate using the printer.
the result.
I personally like the outcome since it relates to the artist but has my own spin on it . One thing that I like is when I look at it I can imagine it in a big expedition.
Process..
The process of me making my piece was simple, I held the acetate images in front of the projector and moved it until I got the right picture and liked what the turnout was, when the paper was moving too much I would stick it on glass to avoid that and also to block the shadows of my hand.
To develop my project I layered the acetate images on top of each other to make this abstract layering collage, I really like this one since where ever you look at it its a different image, the background is a landscape since I put it on a window and that pulls it all together the most because you can see the details from the natural light from outside. When picking my images I tried to go with the most different ones to make have more of a contrast. The darker the orginal image was the lighter it came out onto acetate which made a really nice opposite effect
For my final experiment I used the dark room with light sensitive paper and the red light to create these images, I also moved them about and layered them on top to create a more drastic effect, I love the outcome since they are all very different and I tried to use images that didn't have none or any simularities to widen the outcome
